What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is a browser-based research tool from Google that turns a collection of your own documents into an interactive, queryable knowledge base. You upload sources — PDFs, Google Docs, web URLs, YouTube videos, audio files, or images — and the tool indexes them using Google’s Gemini model. Every answer it generates is grounded strictly in those sources, with inline citations pointing to the exact passage used. The model does not draw on outside knowledge, which makes its outputs verifiable rather than speculative.

The most distinctive feature is Audio Overview, which condenses a notebook’s sources into a 10–20 minute podcast-style dialogue between two AI hosts. The conversation synthesizes themes, surfaces tensions between sources, and can be generated in over 50 languages. On paid plans, a Video Overview option produces an animated summary video, and an Interactive mode lets users interrupt a playing Audio Overview with spoken or typed follow-up questions. Deep Research, available on all tiers, runs multi-step research tasks across every document in a notebook and returns a structured report with cited findings.
